To understand the benefits of filler implantation it is important to understand the makeup of the skin, and why it becomes lined and wrinkled.
The skin is made up of several layers. The inner layer (Dermis) is composed of a network of fibres called collagen and elastin. After the teenage years these fibres begin to break down. The skin then loses its support system in varying degrees and the lines and wrinkles become a permanent feature. Other contributing factors are caused by diet, stress, over exposure to sunlight, frequent squinting and smoking (which affects the area around the mouth the most). Most fillers are natural substances. Once it is introduced into the skin it assimilates into the surrounding tissue and becomes part of those fibresDermal Fillers are gels that are injected just beneath the surface of the skin. They have the effect of 'plumping'
and so are used either to enhance the lips or to smooth lines and wrinkles.
Once it is established that a patient is suitable for filler injection, a local anaesthetic may be applied to the skin area to be treated or the area may be numbed with an injection of local anaesthetic. The injection of fillers will then be given to the affected area. The entire procedure will take approximately 30 minutes and is carried out in the clinic.
Filler implants will last six to nine months and may be topped up when required. Once patients have had three or four treatments will usually find that the time between injections can become as long as twelve to eighteen months and then only a small quantity is required. There may be some swelling and redness immediately after treatment that should subside within 48 hours.
Lip Augmentation
Lip Augmentation will increase the fullness of your upper lip, lower lip, or both. It will not improve problems with lipstick bleed along your wrinkles. If this is your main concern, consider Permanent Make-up or a Wrinkle Treatment. If your lips are full enough but too long or low, then you should consider a Lip Lift, which raises droopy lips. |
